Safari Episode 3

The elephant in the room

So how did the animals fare in the kiln?

The color combos turned out rather unusual and some really nice! But…, my elephant is literally “the elephant in the room”.

First of all, the yellow hurts my eyes! Even a bright yellow lemon is more discrete than this. And then, worse, so much worse, are the stains, blotches, mishaps, whatever you want to call them. A disaster.

A friend who visits the studio then asks me: “there is nothing that you can do to mask it?”.

I am ready to scream: “No!  Nothing can be done about it. Do you have any idea how tough ceramics are!?! “.

Meaning: you go through all the work, the bisque firing, the coloring, putting on the transparent glaze with all the risks of breaking it each time you have to handle it, and only at the very end, after the last firing, the work “stands” or in this case “falls”.

Neither Ion nor I have any idea where this happened and how it happened.

Which is actually even worse than the fact that it did happen…

Well at least the elephant is not on (very) wobbly legs and it can stand up, but no, he can’t stand proudly amidst the other animals.

So, yes… the safari saga goes on.
